Tend ("Tend," "we," "us") makes a calm, psychology-first money app. This policy explains what information we collect when you use the Tend app, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. We built Tend to hold your financial life with care — this page is meant to say plainly what actually happens to your data, not to bury it in legal filler.
1. Information we collect
We collect information you give us directly, and a small amount your device provides automatically so the app works correctly.
Account information
- Email address — used to create and secure your account (via Supabase Auth).
- Display name — shown to you and, if you join an accountability group, to your group members.
Financial information you enter
- Transactions — amount, note, category, date, and an optional emotion tag (e.g. joy, stress, impulse) you attach to a spend.
- Recurring costs — bills or subscriptions you add, with amount and frequency.
- Goals — savings targets, amount saved, monthly reserve, and an optional personal "why."
- Wishlist items — things you're considering buying, used for the 24-hour cooling-off feature.
- Daily check-ins — whether you had a no-spend day and an optional mood.
- Profile details — monthly income, currency, and an optional identity statement (e.g. "I'm becoming someone who saves automatically"), all supplied by you during onboarding or in Settings.
Bank statement imports
If you use the Import feature, the CSV file you select is parsed on your device. We never upload the raw file. Only the resulting transaction rows (date, amount, description, category) are saved to your account, exactly as if you'd entered them by hand.
Coach conversations
When you message the Tend Coach, your message and a small snapshot of your current financial numbers (e.g. safe-to-spend, spending patterns) are sent to our AI provider, Anthropic, solely to generate a reply. See "Third parties," below.
Accountability groups (optional)
If you create or join a group, other members can see a masked summary of your activity — only the specific fields you choose to share (streak, spending patterns, over-budget alerts) using the sharing toggles in the app. Your raw transactions, notes, and amounts are never visible to anyone but you.
Device & usage information
- Locale & timezone — read once on-device to auto-detect your currency. This does not leave your device unless you save a currency preference to your profile.
- Notification preferences — reminder times you choose. Reminders are scheduled locally on your device; we don't use a push notification service or push tokens.
2. How we use your information
- To provide the app's core features — tracking spending, calculating your safe-to-spend number, goals, streaks, and reminders.
- To generate responses from the Tend Coach, using your data to make its guidance concrete and relevant to you.
- To operate accountability groups you choose to join, sharing only what you've opted to share.
- To maintain the security of your account and prevent misuse.
- To communicate with you about the app (e.g. replying if you email us) — we don't send marketing email today.
We do not use your financial data to build an advertising profile, and we do not sell your information.
3. Who we share information with
We use a small number of service providers to run Tend. We don't sell your data, and we don't share it with data brokers or advertisers.
| Who | What they see | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase (database, authentication, hosting) | All account and financial data you enter, stored on our behalf | Powers the app's backend and keeps your data synced across your devices |
| Anthropic (Claude, our AI provider) | Your coach messages and a summary financial snapshot at the time you chat with the Coach | Generates the Coach's replies |
| Other members of a group you join | Only the specific fields you've chosen to share via the sharing toggles | Powers the optional accountability-group feature |
We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Tend or our users.
4. Data storage & security
- Your data is stored with Supabase and protected by row-level security policies, meaning the database itself enforces that only you can read or write your own records (with the narrow, opt-in exceptions of the group-sharing feature described above).
- Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS) between your device, our servers, and our providers.
- Your session credentials are stored on your device using secure, encrypted on-device storage.
- No system is 100% secure, but we design Tend to minimize what's collected and who can see it in the first place.
5. Your choices & rights
- Access & correction — you can view and edit almost everything you've entered directly in the app.
- Deletion — you can delete individual transactions, goals, wishlist items, and recurring costs at any time in the app. To delete your entire account and associated data, visit our account deletion page and we'll process your request within 30 days.
- Notifications — you can turn reminders off or adjust timing anytime in Settings.
- Group sharing — you can leave a group or turn off any sharing toggle at any time; this immediately stops that data from being visible to co-members.
- If you're in the EEA, UK, or a jurisdiction with similar data protection laws, you may also have rights to data portability and to object to or restrict certain processing. Contact us to exercise these rights.
6. Data retention
We retain your information for as long as your account is active, so the app can function. If you delete your account, we delete your personal data from our active systems, except where we're required to retain it for legal, security, or fraud-prevention purposes, or where it persists briefly in routine backups before rotating out.
7. Children's privacy
Tend is not directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.
8. International users
Tend is used by people around the world, and your information may be processed in countries other than your own by us or our service providers (including the United States). By using Tend, you understand your information may be transferred to and processed in these locations.
9. Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the "last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
